The Plot that didn’t earn Noble Prize

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Dr. G N Ramachandran is a pioneer who will always remain a gem to the indian scientific community. While India couldn’t claim the most famous Kohinoor but the research conducted by GNR will always stay with us. As an undergraduate student at IIT Kanpur, we learnt in details about proteins and their structural details. This was the instance wherein our professor enthusiastically discussed Ramachandran Plot but also told us the interesting history behind it. Today, when I have myself completed PhD and Postdocs, I think it’s vital to announce such breakthroughs to a larger audience not limiting to just elite Indian institutes. This is because, someone who inspite of explaining collagen structure, developed Ramachandran Plot and tomographic methods, was not honored by any civilian award or for that matter Noble Prize. This shows why in this world it’s imperative to market and sell your science in a manner that makes it recognized by everyone. Also, careful understanding of the international scientific community is required to gain respect internationally and improve the level of science locally. Moreover, it is indispensable to inculcate deep learning at an adequate age (neither too early nor too late) to enable cutting-edge scientific research locally.
